Clarissa Crotta is New Rider of Ballistic m2s

Morningside Stud is very pleased to announce that Swiss international rider Clarissa Crotta has accepted the ride of Ballistic m2s.

Ballistic m2s (Ekstein Concordia m2s x Condios x Cor de la Bryere) is a 2006 Irish Sport Horse stallion bred by Morningside Stud. He was the first Irish-bred stallion to pass the German stallion performance test, and following the test and until last week Ballistic was ridden and educated by German rider Lars Rethemeier.

Clarissa is an important member of the Swiss showjumping team and she won the Team Gold Medal in the 2009 European Championships with her top horse, West Side v Meerputhoeve. After basing herself in the stables of Bo Kristoffersen and Rolf-Göran Bengtsson for three years Clarissa and her partner, the German rider and manager Sören Kühl, recently established CK Sportpferde GbR in Borgholzhausen, Germany.

Im really happy to have Ballistic in our stable, said Clarissa. He is a very careful and competitive stallion with a lot of potential for the future. Every day he is nice to ride and in a short time he already has become a favorite of our whole team. As a stallion he is super brave and always focused on his job. For the future we think he has everything for a top horse, but the first aim will be the World Breeding Championships for Young Horses in Lanaken!

Tom Reed, the owner of Morningside Stud, stated, âI am delighted that Clarissa and Sören have taken on Ballistic. He has been produced slowly and carefully by Lars Rethemeier and his team, and Ballistic is now ready to step up to bigger national classes and the young horse international classes. I have a lot of confidence in Clarissa as a rider and horsewoman, and Sören, as the manager of CK Sportpferde GbR, made the transition easy. I would like to thank Lars and Sabrina Rethemeier for the very good job they did with Ballistic, and I know they will take great pleasure as Clarissa builds a successful international career for this talented young stallion.â

Condios Available Again to ISH Breeders

Although we still have deep concerns about the ISH Studbook a number of small but positive changes by Horse Sport Ireland, under the leadership of Dr. Patrick Wall, has led us to the decision to allow Condios to service Irish Sport Horse mares in 2013.

Condios is the only stallion owned by Morningside Stud that will service the ISH studbook in 2013. If HSI continues to be responsive to our concerns we may make additional stallions, such as Wang Chung m2s, available in 2014. However we will remove all restrictions on which stallions may service the ISH studbook only when HSI substantially re-orients its breeding policy.

Contact Tom Reed on 087.827.4831 if you would like information on using Condios in your breeding program.

Eric Lamaze New Co-Owner of Wang Chung m2s

Olympic champion Eric Lamaze has purchased 50% of Morningside Studs international showjumper Wang Chung m2s. The chestnut is a 2003 KWPN stallion bred by Morningside Stud.

Prior to moving to Lamazes Belgian yard in early September 2011, the stallion was ridden by Germanys Felix Hassmann as a 6-, 7-, and 8-year-old. Together they won five German Grand Prix, the Bronze Medal in the German Championship of State Champions, and the Vice-Championship in Frances Future Elite series for young international showjumpers; in total they won 13 CSI classes and finished 13 times in either second or third place in international showjumping classes. Under Hassmann Wang Chung m2s was ranked by the FEI as the third best 2003 stallion in international showjumping, a position maintained in the 2011 final rankings even after the horse moved to Lamaze and had a lighter competition schedule. Prior to Hassmann Wang Chung m2s was ridden by the Netherlands Eddie Brinkman, with whom the stallion won the CSI** Zwolle Future Stallion Championship as a five-year-old.

When Eric began riding Wang Chung I was very pleased, of course, stated Dr. Thomas Reed, the owner of Morningside Stud. But when Eric asked to buy half of the stallion I was even more delighted because he believes so much in the stallions potential and he was willing to enter into a long-term partnership between Torrey Pines Stable and Morningside Stud. I believe there is no better rider and horseman in the world to develop Wang Chung for top international sport.

Wang Chung m2s was sired by the worlds third best showjumper in 1997 - 1998, Royal Bravour (by Ramiro), and is out of the ster, preferent, prestatie mare Harnita [by Ahorn]). He is approved as a sire as by the Warmblood Studbook of Ireland (WSI) and three of the worlds top ten studbooks: Anglo European, Irish Sport Horse, and Belgian Warmblood (as a foreign sire). Because of his sport career the stallion has been used lightly in breeding but he has already produced from his first crop of foals the WSI-licensed stallion Chien-Ming Wang m2s (out of Vampire Slayer m2s x Ekstein x Cruising) and three more stallion candidates for the WSI. Frozen semen from Wang Chung m2s will be available from Morningside Stud for export throughout the world. His frozen semen has been used very successfully during the last two years. How Are We Doing?

We recently computed Morningside Stud's "strike rate" for producing CSI showjumpers and CIC/CCI eventing horses. Of all horses we bred from 2000 - 2005 (i.e., old enough to be starting in international sport) 21% are international athletes. Of those we bred that are still alive, 26% are international athletes. And of those we bred that are still alive and not being used as broodmares, 38% are international athletes.

Olympic Eventing Champion Marius' Half-Sister to Join Our Mare Herd

Thanks to our good friend and fellow breeder Walter Blochel we are delighted to announce that Primavera B, the second dam of our stallion prospect Consall B, will be joining Morningside Stud's mare herd.

Primavera B is a Holsteiner state premium mare that competed at M-level before going to stud. She descends from the famous Holsteiner damline 730b.

Primavera B is a half-sister to the following sport horses: Marius (Individual and Team Gold Medalist in eventing at the 2008 Olympics), Cefalo (Holsteiner-approved stallion and Super League Nations Cup and 1.60 m. Grand Prix showjumper), Sprite (1.50 m. international showjumper), and Copyright (1.40 m. international showjumper).

The mare is in foal to the international showjumper Casall la Silla, and the resulting foal will be a full-sibling to the dam of our stallion Consall B. We are keeping our fingers crossed for a filly.

Eric Lamaze Is New Rider of Wang Chung m2s

Morningside Stud's showjumping stallion Wang Chung m2s has a new rider: Eric Lamaze of Canada.

Eric is the reigning Olympic champion, having won the Individual Gold Medal and Team Silver Medal at the 2008 Olympics on the KWPN stallion Hickstead, a grand-son of Morningside Stud's deceased stallion Ekstein. Eric is currently the world's top-ranked international showjumping rider.

Wang Chung m2s (Royal Bravour - ster pref prest Harnita x Ahorn x Erdball xx x Marco Polo) is a 2003 KWPN stallion owned and bred by Morningside Stud. As a 4- and 5-year-old the chestnut stallion was ridden by Eddie Brinkman of the Netherlands and the pair won the Future Stallion Championship at the CSI2* Zwolle show.  From January 2009 until this week Wang Chung m2s was ridden by Felix Hassmann of Germany, who carefully developed the horse and achieved many excellent results including winning five German Grand Prix, winning the Bronze Medal in the German Championat der Landesmeiste, and winning 13 international showjumping classes. Currently Wang Chung m2s is ranked 539 in the world and he is the third most highly ranked 2003 stallion in international showjumping.

"I am very grateful for the excellent job Felix and his team did with Wang Chung," stated Dr. Thomas Reed, the founder and owner of Morningside Stud. "Felix produced the stallion slowly and with a great deal of care and attention. They developed him from being an inexperienced 6-year-old to being Felix's top-ranked international showjumper and one of the world's best 8-year-old international showjumpers. I could not be happier with the job they did with the stallion."

The plan is for Eric to take Wang Chung m2s to their first competition in two weeks, the CSIO5* in Barcelona.

Fernhill M2S Represents Portugal at World Breeding Championship for Eventers

We were pleased to learn today that our homebred 6-year-old gelding Fernhill M2S represented Portugal at the CCI* World Breeding Champion for Young Eventing Horses at Lion d'Angers (France).

Fernhill M2S has competed in only six events in his life so sending him to this tough championship was a big ask. Unfortunately the gelding was eliminated on the cross-country as he simply did not have enough experience to handle this difficult competition.

Fernhill M2S (birth name Confidant M2S) was sired by Morningside Stud's Holsteiner stallion Condios and is out of the Irish Sport Horse mare Rainmaker (Chairmaker x Elm Hill RID).

Several weeks ago Fernhill M2S placed 3rd in the CNC* Michael Leonard Memorial 5 & 6 Year Old Eventing Championship in Ireland.

We expect to see good things from this horse in the future.

KWPN Awards "Prestatie" Predicate to Harnita

We were delighted to hear from the KWPN today that our ster preferent mare Harnita (Ahorn x Erdball xx) has received the predicate "prestatie" in recognition of the three international showjumpers she has produced. Our 6-year-old stallion Wang Chung M2S has competed in 6 international classes so far this year and he has placed 1st in five of the classes and 4th in one class.

We believe this is the second time that a KWPN mare in Ireland has been awarded the prestatie predicate based, in part, on the results in showjumping achieved by her progeny bred in Ireland. The first time was several years ago when Morningside Stud's keur preferent mare Gudrun, the dam of Ulysses M2S, was awarded the prestatie predicate.

Results for Wang Chung M2S & Ulysses M2S

In Germany on Friday Wang Chung M2S and Felix Hassman placed second in a 1.30 m (M-class) with a note of 8.4, just .10 behind the winner.

Ulysses M2S has returned to international showjumping for the first time since his injury in November 2008. At the CSI** in Hoofddorf (Netherlands) Ulysses M2S and his co-owner Rossella de Simone jumped double-clear in the 1.35 class on Thursday. On both Friday and Saturday the duo had one fence down in 1.40 m. classes. Last November while at an international show Ulysses suffered an injury when a stallion in an adjoining temporary stable knocked down a stable wall onto Ulysses.

Progeny of Desir du Chateau at Le Mans

We received another message from Elise Megret, breeder of the 2000 mare Melba Girl (by our stallion Desir du Chateau and out of the mare Bizanne by Narcos II).

"Melba competed this weekend in Le Mans (CSI**). It was her first international show since the Sunshine Tour. She was placed three times: 5th, 4th and 3rd!

There also was an international competition for young horses during the show. A son of Desir called Polias de Blondel (out of a Souviens Toi III mare) won the Grand Prix for 6-years-olds."

Polias de Blondel is now the 11th progeny of Desir du Chateau that has competed in international showjumping.

We thank Elise for keeping us informed and wish Melba Girl and her team continued success.

Irish Minister of Agriculture Approves Warmblood Studbook of Ireland

Brendan Smith T.D., the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, yesterday approved the Warmblood Studbook of Ireland's application to operate, under EU and Irish legislation, the studbook for the Irish Warmblood horse. This historic action has ended the monopoly on sport horse breeding in Ireland previously exercised by the Irish Horse Board/Horse Sport Ireland.

The Warmblood Studbook of Ireland (WSI), a division of Irish Warmblood Studbook Ltd., was founded by Tom Reed and Dawn Kelly, owners of Morningside Stud, and Claire Wood, a horse breeder and trainer also from the Killaloe/Ogonnelloe area of County Clare.

WSI's mission is to help breeders produce international showjumpers that will compete in international Grand Prix, Nations Cup, World Cup, and Championship classes. The Studbook will conduct stallion and mare inspections and the focus is on breeding stock that has clear potential to produce international showjumpers. Each foal will be inspected and the results of those inspections will be fed back into the Studbook's ongoing stallion and mare evaluations. Strict limits have been put in place to restrict the percentage of Irish Draught blood in the stallions and mares approved by the WSI.

"We shall measure our success by how many foals we produce that later become international showjumpers, not by how many foals we register," said Dr. Thomas Reed, Managing Director and Breeding Director of the WSI. "By design we are committed to staying small and selective and to working with like-minded breeders with very good mares who are committed to our vision, goals and strategy for the Irish Warmblood. We also hope to build a community of breeders who generously share their knowledge and insights with each other."

The Studbook developed its rules and procedures based on Morningside Stud's own successful breeding program and the policies of the Holsteiner Verband and the KWPN. "We did not feel the need to reinvent the wheel, so we adopted many of the features of these two very successful studbooks" said Dr. Reed. "But at the same time we have definite views on what works well and what works here in Ireland. For example, we are adopting the Holsteiner's very important philosophy of concentrated genetics and the primacy of the damline while simultaneously adopting, and in fact expanding on, the KWPN's philosophy of ongoing evaluations of stallions before lifetime approval is granted. For our veterinary requirements we have been heavily influenced by the strict yet pragmatic philosophy of the KWPN and the University of Utrecht, a philosophy that resonates very well with the partners of Troytown Equine Hospital in Kildare, who comprise the Studbook's Veterinary Committee. Essentially what we have done is to make explicit for this new Studbook the formal and informal rules and rubrics we have been following at Morningside Stud for the last ten years as they apply to our own stallions, mares, and progeny."

The first foal to be registered by the Warmblood Studbook of Ireland was born on St. Patrick's day, the day before approval was granted: Aibhlinn Bella M2S (by Cornet Obolensky and out of Pandina Bella by Landino x Voltaire) bred by Morningside Stud. With her sire being an Olympic showjumper and her grand-dam Dorina Bella being a full-sister to an Olympic showjumper this Irish Warmblood filly has her career already mapped out.

Melba Girl Jumps Super at CSI*** Sunshine Tour

Yesterday we received an email from Elise Megret, breeder of the 2000 mare Melba Girl (by our stallion Desir du Chateau and out of the mare Bizanne by Narcos II). With the French rider Felicie Bertrand, Melba Girl "jumped at the Sunshine Tour (CSI***) during the last five weeks. She was almost every time clear. Among her performances there she finished 4th in the Small Tour Grand Prix (1.35 - 1.40 m.), 3rd and 4th in the Big Tour A classes (1.35 m.). Last week she was double clear in the Big Tour's Small Grand Prix (1.40 m.). I added the videos on youtube.

First Round

Jump-Off Round

This weekend she made 4 faults in the Jump Off of the Big Tour's Small Grand Prix but she jumped very well."

Thanks, Elise. We wish you continued success with this super daughter of Desir du Chateau!

Wang Chung M2S Moves to Germany

Our 2003 stallion Wang Chung M2S (Royal Bravour x Ahorn) moved to Germany last week and will be ridden for Morningside Stud by German international rider Felix Hassmann.  After settling in with his new rider Wang Chung will be competed in national and international 1.30 m. and 6- and 7-year-old classes.

Felix Hassmann is a 23-year-old international rider who has been competing internationally since 2001.  Among his achievements are winning 3 individual medals
(one gold medal and two silver medals) and 7 team medals (including two gold medals) in the European Young Riders and Junior Riders Championships.  Following his debut in 2001 (as a 15-year-old!) at the World Cup Show in Berlin where he won the Knock-Out class, Felix has gone on to place 1st in the Grand Prix at the World Cup Show at Poznan, 2nd in the CSI**** Frankfurt Grand Prix, 2nd in the CSI***, 3rd in the Nations Cup at Podebrady, and countless placings in other international classes. Felix has had a lot of success producing young horses and receives a great deal of support from his parents and his older brother, the international rider Toni Hassmann.

We thank Eddie Brinkman and his family and team for doing such a great job with Wang Chung for the last two years. Besides winning the Future Stallion title at the Zwolle International Stallion Show in 2008, Eddie consistently produced super results with the stallion by providing Wang Chung a strong education and foundation. Even at his last show, at the end of December, Eddie and Wang Chung won the 1.20 m. class at Laag Soeren (Netherlands) with 60 starters and 15 horses in the jump-off despite being the first horse in the jump-off.

Our Trip to Uruguay

We have just returned from a week-long trip to the beautiful country of Uruguay, a small nation (approximately 3.5 million people) in South America bordered by Brazil on the north and Argentina on the south. During the trip we were able to see all the horses we have sold to Uruguay including progeny of the stallions.  We also watched the 2003 stallion Wind Shear M2S (Ekstein x Orlando x Iroko) compete in 1.20 and 1.30 m. classes. One of the highlights of the trip was watching Wind Shear in a puissance-type competition on the beach at the beautiful Punta del Este resort. Wind Shear cleared 1.60 m. and placed 2nd in the competition.

We thank our friends in Uruguay for the fantastic time and we wish them continued success with their horses and breeding program.
