Latest Article for Horse International Magazine

HOW'M I DOIN'? EVALUATING AND PRICING YOUR FOALS is Tom Reed's latest article for Horse International magazine.

The article can be accessed through our blog.

Next month (October, Issue 9) Horse International is going to publish a very good article by my dear friend Maren Engelhardt about using TB mares in sport horse breeding. The article was going to run alongside my article last month on TBs in sport horse breeding but they ran out of room. Then it was going to run this month but they decided to run my article instead because breeders are evaluating their foals now. I'll take a break next month so Maren's article can be published in my space. It is worth the wait, however, as Maren makes a lot of good points.

In any case, I hope you enjoy this month's article and find it worthwhile.

Announcement of the Death of Ekstein

Our joy in the fantastic showing in Hong Kong by Hickstead (Hamlet x Ekstein) and Don Porfirio (Indoctro x Ekstein) is greatly diminished by the death of Ekstein. Ekstein died while being walked from his stable to the exercise paddock, apparently of a heart attack or stroke. He was 22 years old.

Ekstein was a world-class KWPN sire that produced an Olympic horse (Joel), dozens of international showjumpers, and a half-dozen approved sons including our own Ulysses M2S. More recently we have seen grand-children of Ekstein reaching the highest levels in sport.

We are saddened by the death of Ekstein but his influence on Morningside Stud's breeding program will endure through his son Ulysses M2S (Ekstein x Voltaire); our stallion prospects Boy Toy M2S (Ekstein x Limmerick x Nimmerdor), Ballistic M2S (Ekstein x Condios x Cor de la Byere), and Chien-Ming Wang M2S (Wang Chung M2S x Ekstein x Cruising); eighteen daughters and grand-daughters; and Ekstein's half-sister Ushiniki.

Ekstein Grand-son Hickstead Wins Olympic Individual Gold Medal

Hickstead (Hamlet x Ekstein), who just a few days ago won for Canada the Olympic Team Silver Medal, has today won the Individual Gold Medal in Showjumping.

Hickstead and his rider Eric Lamaze defeated Sweden's Rolf-Goran Bengtsson and his horse Ninja La Silla in the jump-off for the gold medal. Hickstead was the only horse to jump three clear rounds today.

Hickstead is sired by Hamlet (a son of Nimmerdor) and is out of the mare Jomara (sired by our stallion Ekstein). Besides Hickstead and his full-brother Hickstead II (a 2004 stallion approved by Zangersheide), Jomara also produced the international eventing horse Nieco (by the sire Holland).

Congratulations to Eric and Hickstead!

Also in the final today Itot du Chateau and Edwina Alexander (Australia) were in the jump-off for the bronze medal but unfortunately did not jump clear and finished in 10th place.  Itot du Chateau is by Le Tot de Semilly and is out of the mare Sophie du Chateau, a half-sister of our stallion Desir du Chateau.

Morningside Stud Buys KWPN Mare Closely Related to Ulysses M2S

Morningside Stud is pleased to announce the purchase of the 6-year-old KWPN mare Vicky (Burggraaf x Quidam de Revel x Voltaire). Vicky is a daughter of Kretienne, the half-sister of our international jumping stallion Ulysses M2S, the former Champion Mare of the KWPN, and the dam of the Selle Francais approved stallion Taloubet du Rouet.

"When Ulysses' dam Gudrun died in foal to Condios in 2003 we were very disappointed because she had not left us a daughter to continue this fantastic damline", reports Tom Reed. "We have tried repeatedly since that time to buy a mare or filly closely related to Gudrun but without success. But now we are delighted to own this grand-daughter of Gudrun and to re-establish this important damline in our breeding program."

Vicky will be put in foal this year to Morningside Stud's super young stallion Wang Chung M2S (Royal Bravour x Ahorn x Erdball xx), the 2008 Zwolle Future Stallion Champion who is approved by the Anglo European Studbook and the Irish Horse Board.

Conspiracy M2S Events at Flowerhill

Conspiracy M2S did very well at the Intro event at Flowerhill and would have won the class if it were not for some errant course re-building.

After producing an excellent dressage test (his score of 72.5 % / 27.5 penalty points was the only score to break the 70% barrier) and a clear showjumping phase Conspiracy and his rider Katie O'Sullivan ran into trouble in the cross-country phase when a flag was moved on obstacle 14 after the riders had walked the course. Katie and Conspiracy came out of the water complex and went on the wrong side of the flag. Realizing the mistake, she circled around went through again. But these actions caused time penalties to be assessed (Conspiracy would have placed second, 0.2 points behind the eventual winner, with the time penalties added) but more important the pair was eliminated.

Bad luck on the day but we are pleased with how Conspiracy is taking to eventing.

Irish Horse Board Approves Wang Chung M2S

Following an inspection in the Netherlands on 13 May the Irish Horse Board has approved the 5-year-old stallion Wang Chung M2S (Royal Bravour x Ahorn x Erdball xx). He was bred by Morningside Stud and is the first Irish-bred KWPN-registered stallion approved by the IHB. Earlier, as a 4-year-old, Wang Chung M2S was approved by the Anglo European Studbook.

The IHB's inspection team was led by Ned Campion, who represented Ireland at the highest level in showjumping, including the Mexico City Olympics, as an officer in the Irish Army. The highly regarded veterinary surgeon Tom Hurley was also on the inspection team and he gave the stallion a thorough health exam and, along with Ned Campion, assessed the stallion's conformation, movement, and temperament. The inspection team was rounded off by the successful Irish international rider Enda Carroll, who drove in from his stables in Belgium to serve as test rider. As part of the inspection process Wang Chung also passed a rigorous radiological exam.

In February Wang Chung M2S won the prestigious Future Stallion championship at the CSI** Zwolle International Show. In this two day competition for 25 approved stallions from across Europe Wang Chung placed 4th on the first day and won the class on the second day. His overall ranking earned him the title of Future Stallion Champion -- the first time this honour has been won by an Irish-bred horse.

Wang Chung's is very fertile and he produced an excellent first crop. A filly foal by Wang Chung out of a Cruising mare was sold to South America. His fresh chilled semen can be shipped with next-day delivery in Ireland and throughout the European Union. In the autumn his semen will be frozen.
